Samsung has officially commenced the rollout of the One UI 5.1.1 beta programme for its flagship devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Tab S8, in South Korea.
This eagerly awaited software update is based on Android 13, as the company has decided to stick with the current Android version instead of jumping to Android 14.
The final release of the stable version is anticipated to be announced during the Unpacked event scheduled for this month. Let’s take a closer look at the new features introduced in this firmware.
Similar Build for Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Hints at One UI 6
The One UI 5.1.1 is the same build that will be running on the newly released Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 devices.
It’s worth noting that this update could potentially be the last major one for Samsung Galaxy phones before the company transitions to One UI 6, which will be based on the Android 14 operating system.
Initial Rollout in South Korea with Possible Expansion
Currently, the One UI 5.1.1 beta programme is available for Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Tab S8 owners in South Korea. However, there are indications that Samsung may expand the availability of the beta program to more countries and compatible Galaxy devices at a later stage.
Enhanced Reverse Charging Functionality
With the latest update, Samsung is focusing on improving the usability of its new foldable phones. Notably, there are significant improvements to the reverse wireless charging feature on the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
Users can now utilise the cover screen while reverse wireless charging a compatible device, such as a smartwatch or a pair of headphones, making it more convenient for on-the-go charging.
Multitasking Interface Enhancements
OneUI 5.1.1 brings several enhancements to the multitasking interface, aimed at providing a more seamless user experience. Notably, individual apps in the recent view now have previews, indicating whether they are open in split view, full-screen, or other modes.
Additionally, users can switch to split view directly from the pop-up view, and by hovering the S Pen over minimized apps, they can preview their last opened state.
Another significant change is that the taskbar now displays the four most recently opened apps instead of only pinned apps, with its length automatically adapting based on the number of apps present.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Tab S8 users who are part of the One UI 5.1.1 Beta programme can manually check for the update by going to Settings > Software update > Download and install.
